The Truth will travel to Copenhagen

By Anthony Baratta, Ohio, USA

Senator Jim  Inhofe (R-OK), the ranking minority member of the Environmental and Public Works Committee, announced last week that he will travel to Copenhagen as a “one-man truth squad” to tell the world that cap and trade legislation in the US will not pass. As the proud leader of global warming deniers in the Senate, it is unclear whether Inhofe’s truth squad will also be in telling the people of Maldives and Bangladesh they don’t have to worry about rising sea levels.

Anyone with a  general understanding of international negotiations may find Inhofe’s intentions curious. As TPM writes,

“It’s nice to see how seriously foreign policy is taken these days — when a member of the political minority will send his own delegation to an international conference, in order to undermine the government and tell other countries that they can’t work with the United States.”

Whatever his purpose, I’m having trouble picturing what the meetings Inhofe attends will look like. Will he sit behind UN climate change negotiator Todd Stern and shout “nuh uh” whenever Stern tells the Chinese delegates that America is working to address climate change? Will he sit Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, down for a good heart-to-heart talk on whether global warming really exists? Looking forward to it.
