The Invitations Have Been Sent…

– Amy Richmond, IN, USA

There is much speculation concerning whether President Obama will be attending the 15th Conference of the Parties this December in Copenhagen. He, along with 190 other world leaders, now has no excuse to decline upon grounds of political niceties. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark, has, as of Thursday, Nov. 12, sent official invitations to 191 world leaders, urging them to attend the climate summit. He emphasized the importance of this conference in his invitations by stressing that the leaders’ “personal attendance is a pivotal contribution to a successful outcome.”

Already¸ over forty leaders have confirmed their attendance, while others are still considering. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be attending the conference, along with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, supporting the EU’s claim that they wish to lead in global climate policy. President Obama, however, is still “actively considering” attending COP-15 and has not yet promised his presence, stating that he “may come if it a deal appears possible and his presence would help clinch it.” The full story may be found here.
